Post Office Looking to Reduce Hours to Save Money

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The United States Postal Service is backing away from a previous plan to shut down thousands of rural post offices around the country.

Last summer, the Postal Service said it was looking to close or consolidate 3,700 Post Offices. The new plan, is to keep most of the smaller offices open, but with shorter hours. This will affect 13,000 Post Offices, including 145 in Vt.

"We'll begin a new process that gives communities the option to maintain their post office with reduced window service hours.  And we believe this will result in very few post offices being closed in rural America," Megan Brennan, COO, USPS said.

The Postal Service also plans to force thousands of employees to shift from full-time hours to part-time hours.

It's estimated these changes will save the Post Office $500 million a year.
