Lawmakers Want to Make it Illegal for Employers to Access Personal Accounts

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

A group of lawmakers want to ensure your boss can't get into your Facebook or email account.

Some employers require prospective or current employers to provide access to private password protected accounts, like Facebook or other social media websites.

New legislation would make it illegal for prospective or current employers from asking for it.

"This trend really goes against the fundamental values of privacy that are so deeply ingrained in our way of life and our Constitution," Sen. Richard Blumenthal D-Connecticut said.

Employers violating the law could be fined $10,000.
