CIA Foils 'Undetectable' New Al-Qaida Underwear Bomb Plot Against US-Bound Aircraft

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The CIA has thwarted a plot by al-Qaida's affiliate in Yemen to destroy a U.S.-bound airliner using a bomb with a sophisticated new design.

U.S. officials says the attack was to have taken place around the one-year anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, but the CIA stepped in and seized the device before the would-be suicide bomber had picked a target or bought a plane ticket.

The plot involved an upgrade of the underwear bomb that failed to detonate aboard a jetliner over Detroit on Christmas 2009. Officials say it had a more refined detonation system and no metal part. The FBI is examining the latest bomb to see whether it could have passed through airport security and brought down an airplane.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who heads of the Senate Intelligence Committee, says she's been briefed about an "undetectable" device that was "going to be on a U.S.-bound airliner."

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security acknowledged the existence of the bomb, but have no immediate plans to adjust security procedures at airports.
