BOLTON, Vt. -
Around 7:30 Vermont State Police say a Subaru going north on Interstate 89 lost control in Bolton and went into the southbound lane, smashing into a truck.
State Police say Subaru passengers 29-year-old Jason Potvin, 29-year-old April Otis and eight-month-old Hunter Potvin died at the scene.
Authorities say the Williamstown, Vermont pair was not wearing seat belts and the baby wasn't properly restrained.
During rush hour the southbound side of I-89 was shut down for five hours and people were forced to go on Route 2.
On the highway troopers tried to hide those involved with a tarp.
"Unfortunately in this age of social media and people have access to cell phone cameras and everything, we don't want the identity of the persons involved to get out to the people who are closest to them," said Vermont State Police Trooper Mark Magnant.
The tarp however didn't stop people from slowing down and taking a look at the scene.
That police say caused these two cars to collide into the northbound lane, sending two more people to the hospital.
"Unfortunately it jeopardizes not only their own safety, it jeopardizes the safety of everyone that's on the scene," said Magnant.
As for what caused the first accident, state police aren't sure.
As for the truck driver, who is from Concord, New Hampshire, he is in the hospital, but with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say he was wearing a seatbelt.
