Burglar Busted by Alert Neighbor

Posted: Updated:
COLCHESTER, Vt. -

A man was caught breaking into a home by an alert neighbor in Colchester, Vermont.

Colchester Police say Kyle Cushing, 23 of Colchester, will face a burglary charge.

Police say the neighbor called them when they saw Cushing breaking into the house located on Blakely Road Friday afternoon.

Police responded quickly and surrounded the home.  They say Cushing eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.

Police say he was looking for items, including jewelry, to sell quickly, likely for money to buy drugs.

That's why police say they aren't surprised by this middle of the day burglary at a home on a busy street.

"We're seeing a lot more home break-in's, as well as robberies, as well as other crimes. People trying to get money, property that they can sell to support their drugs. As addicts become desperate they're going to do anything," says Detective Tyler Kinney, Colchester Police Department.

Police say nothing actually was stolen, no one was hurt and they call the break-in a random act.

"A little nerve wracking to have something like that happened but it's great neighbors here and police department. So we're really thankful," says Jennifer Ljung Vall, who lives in the home with her boyfriend.

Cushing has been cited with a charge of burglary.  He will later appear in court and police say their investigation continues.
