Ticks Are Out Early This Year

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

They're tiny- but they carry a potentially devastating disease... Lyme disease. And experts say you need to be aware that ticks are a lot more prevalent this year thanks to the early warm up last month.

They're small... they crawl... and if a tick bites you and it's left untreated- they can be deadly. "If you develop symptoms of lyme disease- either the rash, or flu-like illness or swollen joints- make sure you mention the tick bite to your doctor," Health Surveillance Epidemiologist Erica Berl says.

About six-hundred cases of lyme disease are reported each year in Vermont.
Lyme disease can impact your heart and central nervous system, and cause lasting problems.
With summer around the corner, people will be more prone to venturing out into the tick infested woods.
Experts say in addition to repellent, there are things you can do to avoid the blood suckers."Tucking your pants into your socks if you're going to be walking or working in brushy areas - and then also, doing daily tick checks," Berl added.

If you find a tick after a thorough head to toe tick check-- you can avoid getting lyme disease if it's removed promptly...and properly. "Just use fine-point tweezers and grasp the tick as close as possible to your body and then gently and steadily pull up," Berl suggests.

Berl also suggests showering and washing and drying clothes on high heat immediately to kill off any hitch-hikers.
