Prescription Drugs In Vermont: Worries Up, Misuse Down

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Supporters of allowing police in Vermont to search a state prescription database without a warrant often talk of an epidemic of prescription drug abuse in the state.

But the most recent data available from the Health Department's Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs indicate that abuse of such drugs has been steady or declining, and that deaths from misuse of prescription opiates declined every year from 2006 to 2011.

A legislative conference committee has been meeting on a bill relating to police access to the database. The Senate has passed a bill saying specially trained police investigators should be able to search the database without a search warrant. The House version of the bill says police should be required to get a warrant.
