Vt Man in Custody After 7 Hour Standoff With Police

NORTH HYDE PARK, Vt. -

It was a quiet day in North Hyde Park, Vermont on Saturday.

The only sounds to be heard were cars and wind.

But just a few hours ago this scene was much different.

Just before midnight Friday police were called to an apartment building that sits above the town post office.

Lamoille County sheriff deputies say they got a call that a 19-year-old man had locked himself in a bedroom with an armed rifle and was threatening to shoot himself.

It was around that time Dorothy Brown started to hear noises coming from the apartment next door.

"I heard a loud door slamming over there and I didn't think nothing of it because they always slam the doors," said Brown.

Next thing Brown knew an officer knocked at her door and asked her to leave.

Brown refused.

But as time passed authorities continued to ask Brown to leave.

"And he knocked again after awhile and told me again and he said well if you're not going to leave stand over in the corner," said Brown.

Despite his request Brown says she stayed put.

But after a third knock on the door Brown says she agreed to leave.

Outside she saw Route 100 closed with sheriff and state police cars surrounding her building.

Brown left around 1, but wasn't able to return home for awhile.

"It was almost 8 o'clock this morning before they opened up the road," said Brown.

Sheriff Deputies say it took more than six hours to get the man to leave the building without hurting himself.

A task that required the use of the Vermont State Police hostage negotiation team.

An event that startled many who live in this quiet area.

Sheriff Deputies say no charges have been filed against the man.

The investigation into the incident however is still ongoing.
