UVM Building Goes Green

Posted: Updated:

Burlington, Vt. - The University of Vermont is taking the idea of "going green" to a whole new level.

On Friday, UVM opened the newly renovated Aiken Center, the school's Environment and Natural Resources building.

The building now boasts that it is more than 60 percent more efficient than before it was renovated. It has an eco-machine for treating the building's waste-water, and a green roof with eight separate watersheds. But, the masterminds of the project say the building's best feature is its exterior.

"The single most important thing is the external skin of the building. We have insulated from the outside so we have a complete barrier to the outside cold air like today or hot air in the summertime," Mary Watzin, Dean of the Rubenstein School said.

The project took 18 months to complete and cost about $13 million. Experts predict, with the savings in energy costs, the building should pay for itself in about 11 years.
