Vermont Expands Ignition Interlock Program

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A program that allows people convicted of drunk driving to get back behind the wheel is working so well that Vermont lawmakers want to expand it.

On Friday Governor Peter Shumlin signed a bill that allows more people to install an ignition interlock device.

The program allows convicted drunk driver to use a device that ensures they're sober by random breath checks

Until now if someone refused a breathalyzer test they weren't able to use the device.

But lawmakers say not giving DUI offenders this option is more dangerous.

"Simply telling people they can't drive we found realistically doesn't work. They will continue to drive and be driving illegally on the highway. This program allows them to legally drive sober on the highway," said State Rep. Eldred French.

Lawmakers say they're considering making it mandatory for repeat DUI offenders to get the ignition interlock devices.

New York requires anyone convicted of drinking and driving to have them installed.
