Vermont and US Officials Highlight Irene Housing in Barre

BARRE, Vt. -

Five Vermont families displaced by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene are living in a newly renovated apartment house in Barre courtesy of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

State and FEMA officials highlighted the project Wednesday.

Hundreds of Vermont families were displaced by Irene and some still don't have a permanent place to live.

FEMA used a special program that paid about $69,000 to renovate the historic building on Barre's South Main Street.

The residents will be able to live in the building rent-free until next March or until they find permanent housing.

And it's expected that once families move out of the Barre building, other affected families still in need of housing will be able to move in.
