U.S. Senate Passes Postal Reform

Posted: Updated:

Burlington, Vt. - Thousands of postal workers have new hope all because of a bill that passed the U.S. Senate Wednesday afternoon.

The Postal Service has plans to shut down 252 mail processing centers around the country, as well as hundreds of rural post offices.

But, a plan by the Senate cuts the number of centers that could close in half, to only 125.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders (I) says that puts the White River Junction mail processing plant on the safe list if the U.S. House passes the Senate bill.

"I think you have some people in the House who frankly would just privatize the post office tomorrow if they could. But I think you got a lot of others who are deeply concerned about maintaining rural post offices," Sanders said.

If the House does not pass the Senate bill, the Postmaster General can begin closing centers and offices after May 15.
