WASHINGTON -
New York Senator Charles Schumer is introducing legislation that would protect door-to-door postal delivery services and a two year moratorium on rural post office closings.
According to a press release, S.1789, the 21st Century Postal Service Act, would have new group boxes, like those in apartment complexes, be setup for an entire neighborhood or street. An amendment, supported by Sen. Schumer, would keep door-to-door delivery.
More than 50 rural offices in New York were proposed to close according to the original plan by the Postmaster General. Sen. Schumer supports a second amendment that wouldn't allow those offices to be closed for two years.
"Hundreds of thousands of Upstate seniors and businesses rely on rural post offices and door-to-door delivery in every corner of the state," said Schumer. "We need to make major reforms to the postal service to protect the vital service it provides, but saving the post office while shutting down key post offices and moving delivery further from people's homes makes no sense at all."
