Tourists Visit Vermont Despite Lackluster Winter

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

New numbers are out that show while major snow was a no-show this winter, visitors still traveled to Vermont.

Vermont's Tourism Department says the state collected $12-million in meals and rooms tax money in February.

While that's below target, it was more than last year.  Tourism staff say Vermont benefited from a challenging winter across the country.

"We really say that a lot of consumers who may have spent their time traveling to the west coast or to the mid-west to go skiing or snowboarding may have instead hopped in the car and drove to Vermont to take advantage of what was close and easy to get to," says Steve Cook, deputy tourism commissioner.

To make up for the winter and Tropical Storm Irene, the tourism department is about to launch a new, national summer tourism campaign.
