Vt. Dairy Farmers Appeal to the Federal Government for Help

For 6 generations Riverside Farm has operated in Richmond, Vermont.

It grows hundreds of acres in crops, but its primary purpose dairy.

Like many other farmers in the state, Dave Conant is worried about his business.

On Friday he, along with several other farmers, met with Congressman Peter Welch to share his concerns.

"We just don't want to survive," said Conant.

Conant says they want to do well in the industry.

But Vermont farmers are struggling to keep pace with the rest of the country because farms here pay more for feed.

"It's very difficult to compete with some of the bigger producers," said

The other problem, a lot of milk is being produced nationwide, which drives down the price farmers here get.

To help curb that, Welch wants a system that encourages farmers to produce enough milk to make money and not a surplus.

"You give them some confidence that if they maintain production levels they'll still get a payment that covers their costs and allows them to pay their bills," said Congressman Welch.

Although the farmers here like the idea Welch says it's unlikely to pass anytime soon.

"The biggest challenge we have is just the toxic budget politics in Washington that are getting in the way of a lot of sensible things," said Congressman Welch.

That Welch says gets in the way of a lot of sensible things and can leave farmers here in a lot of trouble.
