ALBANY, N.Y. -

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a comprehensive NY-Sun initiative to expand solar development in New York Thursday.

According to a press release, the initiative is expected to double the amount of customer-sited solar power installed annually in New York, and quadruple that amount by 2013.

"The NY-Sun Initiative puts New York at the forefront of solar development and research, creating green jobs while containing energy costs for consumers," Governor Cuomo said. "This clean energy investment will help protect the environment, expand our solar capacity, and lead to a longterm reduction of the cost of solar in New York."

The program is offering $30 million and is accepting applications.

Both NYSERDA and NYPA are providing $40 million to promote research into reducing the overall equipment and installation costs. The press release says this will make New York competitive and will not require government subsidies.
