Strong Turkey Season Predicted in Vermont

Posted: Updated:
BENNINGTON, Vt. -

Hunters are expecting a strong turkey season in Vermont.

Lee Dufresne, who sells camouflaged clothing for hunting, tells the Bennington Banner turkeys should be active in the early part of the season and susceptible to calls.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife says hunters took more than 4,700 turkeys in 2011.

Turkeys were all but extinct in Vermont before 1969, when 31 birds were released in the state. Since then, the population has grown to 50,000.

Vermont's Youth Turkey Hunting Weekend is taking place April 28 and 29. The spring turkey season is scheduled from May 1 through May 31.
