ST. ALBANS, Vt. -
Police want to know who and how someone ended up dead in the City of St. Albans public pool.
Maintenance workers found the body Monday as they prepared to open the pool for the season.
"The person did not look like they were dressed to swim. They were clothed but beyond that we don't know if it's accidental or if it's homicidal or what," says Jim Hughes, Franklin County State's Attorney.
Hughes would not say anything else about the person, whether they were a male or female, their age or how long they had been in the pool.
St. Albans Police Chief Gary Taylor says maintenance workers had been at the pool a week ago.
"Nobody observed the body," says Taylor.
Taylor says the workers who found the body Monday were there to get the pool ready to open for the season. He did not say if the body might be connected to missing people in the area.
But Taylor offered reassurance to people in St. Albans.
"I have no reason to believe the public should be concerned about any danger posed to the general public," says Taylor.
Prosecutors say the body was taken to the medical examiner who will hopefully answer a list of questions.
"Time of death. Maybe how long the person has been in the water. Identity and cause of death," says Hughes.
Prosecutors say they expect the autopsy results soon. That could be delayed if more tests are needed.
