NY Governor Warning New Yorkers of Fire Danger

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, N.Y. -

Governor Cuomo is urging New Yorkers to be cautious because of high danger of fires across the state.

"The potential for disastrous wildfires is present in all areas of the state and we must do whatever we can to prevent fires from occurring," Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press release. "The state will continue to closely monitor the wildfire danger and I will deploy whatever resources are necessary to protect New Yorkers should a critical situation occur."

The governor is asking New Yorkers to refrain from starting any outdoor fires, keep a close eye on grills and make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished.

The press release says that Governor Cuomo is taking the following steps to prepare the state in the event a fire breaks out:

  • The New York State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Albany has been activated to provide a heightened state of readiness.
  • One State Police helicopter equipped with aerial firefighting equipment will be repositioned in an area of the state where the risk is the highest for fires.
  • National Guard helicopters will be at a heightened state or readiness to support wild land firefighting operations.
  • State and Police and Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will conduct aerial reconnaissance in the high risk areas to identify fire situations before they threaten life and property.

There is a state ban on residential brush burning that is in effect through May 14. Violators are subject to both criminal and civil enforcement actions.
