Parents Rally Against Vaccine Bills

Posted: Updated:

Burlington, Vt. - Dozens of angry parents are taking a stand against two bills in the Vermont Legislature that affect vaccines for their kids.

For Nicole Matten, choice over children's vaccinations is personal. A few months ago, Matten's seven-year-old daughter, Kaylynne, died just 92 hours after she was vaccinated.

"It's still hard. We're still dealing with losing her," Matten said.

Vermont's Health Commissioner says Kaylynne died of inflammation of the heart but it is not clear if it was linked to the flu shot.

None the less, that is why Matten and others were at a rally Thursday outside Vermont's Department of Health.

In January, the Vermont Legislature introduced two bills that would do away with a parent's right to decline State required vaccinations for their kids for philosophical reasons.

That would take away an exemption that many parents use for fear of health risks from vaccines.

But most opponents of the bills just want the State to stay out of their business.

"Parents need to decide for themselves the acceptable risks verses benefits of the newest, newer vaccines that are out there today," member of the Vermont Coalition for Vaccine Choice Jennifer Stella said.

The Senate passed one of the bills which has now been passed over to the House.

There will also be a public hearing on this issue, Wednesday, March 21 at 6pm.
