Burlington, Vermont - More than 50 Vermont cities and towns will vote on a resolution this Town Meeting Day to voice their opinion on what's known as the Citizens United decision.
"The ability to for corporations to potentially turn any election how they like," says Vermont Progressive Party spokesperson Robert Millar.
The landmark U.S. Supreme Court case defines corporations as people, which means they can give as much money as they want to a campaign of their choosing.
"They have their own agenda which isn't necessarily in line with what the people want," says Millar.
He says allowing corporations with all their money and power contribute as much as they want does an injustice to democracy.
"Reeks havoc with our political system when millionaires and corporations can just pump millions and millions of dollars into the election process," says Millar.
Not everyone agrees putting a resolution on a Town Meeting Day ballot is the way to address the issue.
UVM Political Science Professor Garrison Nelson says issues such as an amendment to the constitution have no business in a Town Meeting Day. He says those meetings are reserved for road, education and budget concerns.
"I seriously doubt that two-thirds of the Senate and two-thirds of the House are going to pay much attention to what towns in Vermont-- one of the nation's most liberal states, are going to do," says Nelson.
He says more than 1,500 constitutional amendments have been proposed in the past 40 years-- only one has passed.
"It's a symbolic gesture with very little substantive impact," adds Nelson.
