People Showing Support for Lowell Wind Project

Posted: Updated:

Lowell, Vermont - Nearly 100 people met at the Lowell Fire Department to show their support for Green Mountain Power's wind project.

Select Board Chairman Richard Pion says the protesters are not speaking for everyone. He says all they are doing is delaying the project and increasing its cost.

On Town Meeting Day 2010, the Kingdom Community Wind project in Lowell was supported by 75 percent of town voters.

"After almost two years of discussion, a strong vote in support by Lowell, and a ruling by the Vermont Public Service Board that the wind project is in the public good, the people and the regulators have spoken," said Richard Pion, Chair of the Lowell Select Board. "Now, not liking the outcome, a small number of people are trying to block this project, claiming that they are doing it for us.  They are not.  What they are doing is slowing the project and raising costs that ultimately VEC customers will have to pay."

Some of the protesters are camping out on private property near the construction site, within a 1,000 foot blast safety zone.
