200 Gallons of Oil Found in Sunken Boat

Posted: Updated:

Montpelier, Vermont - An Environmental Protection Agency official says about 200 gallons of oil products were recovered from a tugboat that sank in Lake Champlain in 1963.

But no fuel was found in the tanks on the tug William McAllister when they were examined by divers in 165 feet of water about five miles south of Port Kent, N.Y.

The EPA's Alan Humphrey says the final determination about the presence of fuel was made on Monday after 13 dives over several days

The EPA had been concerned the fuel tanks could hold thousands of gallons of diesel fuel, which could have ruptured and caused an environmental disaster on Lake Champlain.

Humprey says the oil products that were found had been trapped inside the wreck.
