Doheny Plans 2012 Rematch

Posted: Updated:

Plattsburgh, New York- There could be a rematch in the race to be New York's next congressman from the 23rd district.

On Wednesday, Republican Matt Doheny says he wants another shot at beating Democrat Bill Owens.  It would be Doheny's third try for the seat.

Doheny says he is gearing up to take on Owens and is willing to open his wallet to do it. In his 2010 campaign, the 41-year-old spent $2-million of his own money.

Doheny says he is the person to represent New York's North Country in Washington.

"Our congressman and our president are falling down," says Doheny.

The last time we saw Doheny was about a year ago. The businessman ran in a tight race against Owens.

That race ended with a narrow Owens win.

This time Doheny appears to want to link Owens with President Barack Obama whose approval rating is at an all-time low.

"When the current congressman is in favor of the president and his spending programs, his taxing programs and more policies that are going to be anti-growth that will lead to more deficits, you have to call both of them out," says Doheny.

Doheny says his priorities would be to create jobs and cut spending in Washington. But as politicians there argue over federal disaster spending, he does support government money for people impacted by flooding.

"People need it right now," says Doheny.

The 23rd district has had its share of special elections and so called spoiler candidates that might have changed election results.

Owens has yet to say if he is going to run again.
