Firefighters responded to a house fire in St. Albans at around 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
Flames could be seen from miles away at the home located on Sheldon Road. Cecile Rushleau, the owner, was trapped inside.
"I was shocked and worried," Neighbor Gladys Roberts said.
Dave Chaplin was putting together furniture across the street and quickly moved into action, and ran towards the fire to rescue Cecile from the burning building.
"I knew there was a lady upstairs so I ran over there and got the ladder," Dave Chaplin said.
Everett Hulbert was driving by and also stopped to help. Hulbert climbed up the ladder to help Cecile get down to safety.
"It was getting hot in that room and I don't know how much longer she would have lasted in the house," Everett Hulbert said. "There was great teamwork by everyone and am just glad no one got hurt."
But Cecile wasn't the only one in the house. Maurice Lambert and his wife rent a room downstairs and were inside when the fire broke.
"I just saw the smoke coming out of the garage, I ran out immediately and I moved the car," House Resident Maurice Lambert said.
Neighbors say according to Cecile's husband it started in the garage.
"He said he was filling his lawn mower with gas and a little bit spilled on the engine and it blew," Roberts said.
The house is a complete loss.
